Key Signs of Opossum Activity

Opossums, known for their elusive nature, nonetheless leave behind unmistakable signs of their activities. Being able to identify these signs is crucial for the early detection and effective management of any potential opossum issues. Here are the five primary indicators of opossum activity, each signifying their presence in or around your property:

Nighttime Sounds: In our extensive experience with opossum control in Colleyville, we've found that unusual noises during the night are a reliable indicator of their presence. These sounds can vary from scratching and rustling to more pronounced thumping noises. Such auditory clues are particularly common in enclosed spaces like attics or under decks, where opossums may seek refuge or build their nests.

Visible Outdoor Damage: Opossums are foragers by nature, which often leads to noticeable signs of disturbance outside. Key indicators include upturned plants or disturbed flower beds, lawns that appear dug up in search of insects or grubs, and trash cans that have been tampered with. Such disruptions not only signal the presence of opossums but also point to their search for food and nesting materials.

Musky Odor: One of the more distinct signs of an opossum's presence is the musky smell they emit. This odor is particularly strong near their feeding or nesting areas and becomes even more concentrated in enclosed spaces like garages, sheds, or crawlspaces. The persistence of this smell can also indicate the presence of a nest or regular feeding spot.

Droppings and Footprints: Opossum droppings are unique in shape, typically large and spindle-shaped, often found along paths they frequent. Additionally, their distinctive footprints, characterized by opposable thumbs on their hind feet, can be a clear giveaway of their presence. These tracks might be found in soft soil, mud, or even in dusty areas like a seldom-used garage or shed.

Direct Sightings: The most conclusive evidence of an opossum problem is spotting the animals themselves, usually active around dusk or dawn. Regular sightings, particularly near potential food sources like gardens or garbage areas, or near possible entry points to your home, like loose siding or open vents, strongly suggest an opossum infestation.

Recognizing these signs is a vital step towards effective opossum management. If you observe any of these indicators, it's important to act promptly and responsibly. Engaging a professional wildlife management service, such as Critter Stop, is advisable for a humane and efficient resolution. Our team is equipped to assess the situation, implement appropriate control measures, and provide advice on preventing future incursions, thereby ensuring both the safety of your property and the welfare of the wildlife

Handling Opossums in the Attic: Strategies and Prevention

Encountering an opossum in your attic is a situation that requires a nuanced and careful strategy. The initial step in confirming their presence involves a thorough inspection for tell-tale signs such as droppings, nesting materials, and a distinct musky odor that these creatures are known for.

Directly attempting to remove these animals is generally not advised due to their tendency to become defensive when threatened. Instead, a more effective approach involves cutting off their food supply and securing other potential entry points into your home. This might include ensuring that trash bins are sealed and pet food is kept indoors. In such situations, it's advisable to promptly get in touch with Critter Stop.

With our extensive experience providing opossum trapping services in the Colleyville area, where we have successfully managed hundreds of wildlife incidents, our team is well-equipped to handle opossum intrusions efficiently and humanely, ensuring minimal stress to both the animal and the homeowner.

After successfully removing the opossum, it’s crucial to implement preventive measures to avoid similar occurrences in the future. This involves a meticulous process of sealing all potential entry points, such as vents, roof gaps, and any other small openings that could provide access to these creatures. Thorough cleaning of the attic space is also essential to eliminate any lingering scents that might attract other wildlife. It's beneficial to engage in regular attic inspections and maintain its condition to prevent future invasions.

I’d give a 10 star review if I could! We had a great experience with Critter Stop. Everyone I dealt was friendly, professional, and reassuring. Phillip was very helpful and knowledgeable about the work he was doing. He walked me around the entire house to make sure I saw and understood the services he provided. He was also really nice and answered all my questions — he is exactly the type of person that should be interacting with customers.I love the fact that they will come back for up to 1 year after installation if any problems occur — this shows me they stand behind their work. The owner was great too, he personally came to my house and walked me through their offering. I recommend critter stop to anyone and everyone!

Critter Stop is a fantastic business! Everyone involved is extremely professional and very easy to communicate with. Chisam, the owner, did a great job of explaining the process to get the squirrels out of my attic during the initial free estimate. The exclusion crew who did all of the initial work was fabulous. The crew consisted of Phillip, Nick and Corey who arrived promptly when they said they would. They are happy, positive employees. Everyone is very polite and patient in explaining their work and answering questions. They came back several times to check the traps and finish it off with the fogging. Lester was very good about following up to schedule each trap check with me, and the office staff who took care of the billing was very efficient. Critter Stop is a well run company with honest, trustworthy employees! Thank you to all of you who worked hard to make my attic critter free and for the peace of mind that you guarantee your work. Great to know I can call them if for some reason a squirrel figures out a way to get back in!
