Armadillo Problems: How They Affect Homes and Gardens

Armadillos, while naturally intriguing creatures, can pose several problems when they come into close contact with human habitats. Here are some key reasons why armadillos are often considered problematic:

Landscape Damage: Armadillos are known for their digging habits. They burrow in search of insects and grubs, which can lead to significant damage to lawns, gardens, and landscaping. This digging not only ruins the aesthetic of outdoor spaces but can also harm the roots of plants and destabilize the ground.

Structural Damage: The burrowing can extend to the foundations of structures, potentially causing cracks and weakening the stability of buildings, decks, and other structures. This can lead to costly repairs and safety concerns.

Risk to Underground Systems: Their digging can also affect underground systems such as plumbing, electrical wiring, and irrigation systems, leading to additional repair costs and potential hazards.

Disease Carriers: Armadillos have been known to carry and transmit diseases to humans, most notably leprosy (Hansen's disease). Though the risk of transmission is low, it remains a concern, especially in areas with high armadillo populations.

Attracting Predators: The presence of armadillos can attract larger predators to residential areas, which can create a new set of challenges and safety concerns for homeowners and their pets.

Difficult to Deter: Armadillos are not easily deterred by traditional methods like fences or repellents due to their strong burrowing capabilities and persistence. This makes professional trapping and removal services often necessary to effectively manage their presence.

In summary, while armadillos are an important part of the ecosystem, their habits and potential risks make them a problem when they invade residential areas. Property owners must be aware of these issues and consider professional intervention to manage armadillo invasions safely and effectively.

Signs Of Armadillo In Your Garden

Determining if an armadillo has made its way into your garden involves looking out for several distinctive signs. Armadillos, known for their digging habits, leave a trail of clues:

Burrows and Holes: The most obvious sign of an armadillo in your garden is the presence of burrows. Armadillos dig holes in search of insects and grubs, which can be quite deep and are usually about 7-10 inches in diameter. You may find these holes near the foundations of buildings, sidewalks, or under shrubbery.

Uprooted Plants: As armadillos forage for food, they can uproot flowers and vegetables in your garden. They aren't eating the plants themselves but are digging around them, which can cause significant damage to your garden.

Damaged Lawn: Look for areas in your lawn that appear to be dug up or disturbed. This could look like small patches of turned soil or areas where the grass has been uprooted. These disruptions are typically more extensive than what smaller animals like squirrels would cause.

Footprints: Armadillo tracks are unique, with four toes on their front feet and five on their rear, and sharp claws for digging. These tracks might be visible in the soil of your garden or near their burrows.

Nocturnal Sounds: Armadillos are primarily nocturnal. If you hear rustling or soft digging sounds at night, especially in areas with dense vegetation or near your home's foundation, it might indicate an armadillo’s presence.

Flattened or Disturbed Vegetation: As armadillos move through your garden, they may flatten vegetation or leave paths through grass or garden beds due to their consistent foraging patterns.

Our Step-by-Step Armadillo Trapping Process

At Critter Stop, our armadillo trapping process is designed to be humane, efficient, and effective, ensuring minimal stress to the animals and maximum peace of mind for you. Here's how we handle armadillo invasions:

Comprehensive Site Assessment: Our first step is a thorough free inspection of your property to identify signs of armadillo activity, such as burrows, digging marks, and damaged vegetation. This helps us understand the extent of the infestation and the best locations to set traps.

Strategic Trap Placement: Based on the assessment, we strategically place specially designed live traps in areas with high armadillo activity. These traps are humane, ensuring the armadillos are not harmed.

Humane Relocation: Once an armadillo is captured, we adhere to local wildlife regulations regarding their safe and humane relocation. We transport them to a suitable habitat far from residential areas, where they can continue their natural behaviors without posing a risk to properties.

Preventive Measures and Advice: After trapping, we guide preventive measures to avoid future armadillo problems. This includes advice on yard maintenance, securing food sources, and fortifying potential entry points around your property.

Property Repair and Restoration: We also offer services to repair any damage caused by armadillos, such as fixing burrowed areas and reinforcing weakened structures, to restore your property to its pre-infestation state.

Our armadillo trapping process at Critter Stop focuses on resolving your current wildlife challenges while also helping to prevent future issues. We are committed to providing a safe, humane, and effective solution to your armadillo problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

After trapping an armadillo, it is humanely relocated to a suitable natural habitat away from residential areas. This relocation adheres to local wildlife regulations and is done in a way that ensures the safety and well-being of the armadillo while also addressing the concerns of homeowners. The goal is to release the armadillo into an environment where it can thrive without posing a risk to properties or people.
The best way to trap an armadillo involves using a live trap placed near their burrows or paths they frequently use. It is important that the homeowner or building owner check the traps regularly, at least once every 24 hours, and follow local wildlife regulations.
Trapping armadillos can be challenging due to their nocturnal habits and strong burrowing instincts. They don't respond to bait as readily as other animals since they primarily eat insects and larvae found in soil. The key to successful trapping lies in placing the traps strategically along their known paths or near their burrows. It often requires patience and a good understanding of armadillo behavior, which is why many homeowners find it more effective to enlist professional wildlife control services such as Critter Stop for trapping armadillos.

Yes, armadillo traps can work effectively when used correctly. The key to success is strategic placement along the armadillo's regular pathways or near their burrows. While armadillos are not typically attracted to bait, the design of the trap can guide them as they follow their usual routes. Consistent monitoring and checking of the traps are essential.
To get an armadillo out of your yard, you can use humane live traps placed along their frequent paths or near burrows. Ensure regular monitoring of the traps. Additionally, remove potential food sources by controlling insect populations and keep your yard clean to make it less attractive to armadillos. Installing fences that extend into the ground can also deter them.

Our 4 Step Process

Critter Stop Inspection
1

Free Inspection

Critter Stop offers free in-home consultations to build custom solutions to your problems. We inspect your home thoroughly, inside and out, for signs of damage, animal entry, animal nesting, droppings, and more. Once we discuss the extent of the problem and what needs to be done to fix it, we’ll document a game plan together.

2

Seal Your Home

Sealing your home immediately is our priority. The exclusion team will thoroughly patch up potential entry sites from the roof to the foundation and everywhere in between. Once we’re sure no other rodents are getting in, we’ll set our traps in those areas we suspect animal activity.

3

Remove The Critters

Our technicians will check in on your home several times throughout this process. If game cameras have been set up, we’ll review those with you to discuss the animal activity. Once the traps are cleared, we will reset them and re-evaluate all the sealed points of entry to ensure no critter has re-chewed a hole or found a new way into your property.

4

Restore & Sanitize

We don’t call it a job well done once the pest is gone. There’s more work to be done! We completely restore your affected area by pulling up and replacing damaged insulation. Additionally, we fog the affected area to disinfect and remove animal pheromones that can attract new pests in the future.

“I used Critter Stop due to rats and squirrels in my attic. They also chewed up siding on the house to get in. Critter Stop was able to remove the rodents and secure the entry points. Everyone I dealt with was very polite and professional. They were able to come out quickly, communicated well, and they always showed up on time. I would use them again.”

I’d give a 10 star review if I could! We had a great experience with Critter Stop. Everyone I dealt was friendly, professional, and reassuring. Phillip was very helpful and knowledgeable about the work he was doing. He walked me around the entire house to make sure I saw and understood the services he provided. He was also really nice and answered all my questions — he is exactly the type of person that should be interacting with customers.I love the fact that they will come back for up to 1 year after installation if any problems occur — this shows me they stand behind their work. The owner was great too, he personally came to my house and walked me through their offering. Critter Stop is a fantastic business! Everyone involved is extremely professional and very easy to communicate with. Chisam, the owner, did a great job of explaining the process to get the squirrels out of my attic during the initial free estimate. The exclusion crew who did all of the initial work was fabulous. The crew consisted of Phillip, Nick and Corey who arrived promptly when they said they would. They are happy, positive employees. Everyone is very polite and patient in explaining their work and answering questions. They came back several times to check the traps and finish it off with the fogging. Lester was very good about following up to schedule each trap check with me, and the office staff who took care of the billing was very efficient. Critter Stop is a well run company with honest, trustworthy employees! Thank you to all of you who worked hard to make my attic critter free and for the peace of mind that you guarantee your work. Great to know I can call them if for some reason a squirrel figures out a way to get back in!
