Key Signs of an Opossum Problem

Opossums, typically secretive, leave clear signs of their presence. Recognizing these signs early can aid in prompt and effective management of an infestation. Here are five primary indicators of opossum activity on your property:

Nocturnal Sounds: Based on our opossum removal experiences in Frisco, early indications of an opossum issue often include unusual nocturnal noises. These sounds, like scratching, scuttling, or thumping, emanate from areas such as attics, walls, or under the house, hinting at opossum movement.

Outdoor Damage: Opossums tend to forage in gardens, lawns, and trash cans. Evidence of their foraging includes disrupted vegetation, upturned lawns, and littered garbage.

Musky Smells: In our Frisco opossum trapping experience, a strong, musky odor frequently indicates opossum infestations, especially near their nesting or feeding spots, such as under decks or in storage spaces.

Droppings and Tracks: Opossum excrement is distinctive, large, and spindle-shaped, often found along their regular paths. Their unique footprints, marked by opposable thumbs on their hind feet, are another unmistakable sign.

Direct Sightings: The most definitive proof of an opossum infestation is spotting them on your property, typically seen foraging at twilight or dawn.

Observing these signs calls for immediate action. Contacting a professional wildlife removal service like Critter Stop ensures a humane and effective resolution, keeping your property safe and free from opossums.

Addressing an Opossum in Your Attic: Strategies and Prevention

Finding an opossum in your attic can be unsettling, yet it's a frequent issue for many homeowners, especially in areas rich in wildlife. Opossums seek out attics for their warmth and security, particularly during colder months. If you suspect an opossum in your attic, the first step is confirming its presence. Look for signs like droppings, nesting materials, and their characteristic musky scent. Addressing this situation calmly and safely is crucial.

Upon verifying an opossum’s presence, avoid trying to remove it yourself. Opossums can become defensive when threatened, posing risks of injury or disease transmission. Isolate the area from the rest of your house and remove any attractants like open trash bins and pet food. The next step is to contact a professional wildlife removal service. Specialists at Critter Stop possess the necessary expertise and equipment for safe, humane opossum extraction from your property.

After the opossum's removal, preventing future infestations is key. This includes sealing potential access points to your attic, like damaged vents or roof gaps. A thorough cleaning is also vital to eliminate any lingering scents from the opossum, which might attract others. Regular inspections of your attic and surrounding areas can significantly reduce the likelihood of wildlife intrusions. Handling an opossum in the attic requires an informed, considerate approach to ensure safety for both the animal and your household.

Complimentary Evaluation: Our process begins with a detailed, free assessment of your property. Our trained staff identifies signs of opossum activity, locates their entry points, and assesses any resulting damage. Understanding the scope of the infestation and the opossums' entry methods is crucial for successful removal.

Tailored Trapping Plan: Following the assessment, we devise a customized trapping strategy. We employ live traps specifically designed for opossums, ensuring their safe capture without injury. These traps are placed at known entry areas or active locations.

Humane Capture: We prioritize the opossums' well-being and safety during trapping. Our team is adept at careful handling and relocating opossums, avoiding any stress or harm to the animals.

Securing Entry Points: Post-removal, our focus turns to preventing future incursions. This involves sealing all potential access points, such as cracks in the roof, vents, and openings around pipes, using durable materials for permanent repairs.

Sanitation and Cleaning: Opossums often leave behind waste, urine, and nesting materials, posing health risks. We thoroughly clean these areas, using potent cleaners to eliminate any hazardous substances and odors. This step is essential for restoring your attic or affected area to a hygienic, safe condition.

Ongoing Monitoring and Assistance: After the initial removal and repair, we provide continuous monitoring services to ensure your home remains free of opossums. Our team remains available for advice and guidance on preventative measures to deter wildlife.

Ethical Release and Relocation: We adhere to all local wildlife regulations regarding the humane treatment and relocation of captured opossums. The animals are released into suitable natural habitats away from urban settings, allowing them to thrive in a more appropriate environment.

I’d give a 10 star review if I could! We had a great experience with Critter Stop. Everyone I dealt was friendly, professional, and reassuring. Phillip was very helpful and knowledgeable about the work he was doing. He walked me around the entire house to make sure I saw and understood the services he provided. He was also really nice and answered all my questions — he is exactly the type of person that should be interacting with customers.I love the fact that they will come back for up to 1 year after installation if any problems occur — this shows me they stand behind their work. The owner was great too, he personally came to my house and walked me through their offering. I recommend critter stop to anyone and everyone!

Critter Stop is a fantastic business! Everyone involved is extremely professional and very easy to communicate with. Chisam, the owner, did a great job of explaining the process to get the squirrels out of my attic during the initial free estimate. The exclusion crew who did all of the initial work was fabulous. The crew consisted of Phillip, Nick and Corey who arrived promptly when they said they would. They are happy, positive employees. Everyone is very polite and patient in explaining their work and answering questions. They came back several times to check the traps and finish it off with the fogging. Lester was very good about following up to schedule each trap check with me, and the office staff who took care of the billing was very efficient. Critter Stop is a well run company with honest, trustworthy employees! Thank you to all of you who worked hard to make my attic critter free and for the peace of mind that you guarantee your work. Great to know I can call them if for some reason a squirrel figures out a way to get back in!
