Top 5 Indicators of an Opossum Issue

Opossums might be stealthy, but they leave clear evidence of their presence. Immediate recognition of these indicators is key to a swift and successful resolution. Here are the foremost signs of opossum presence in your area:

Nighttime Noises: Based on our experience in Hurst, odd sounds at night frequently signal an opossum problem. Be alert to noises such as scratching, moving in restricted areas, and heavy thudding, indicating their presence in your attic or under the building.

Outdoor Damage: Opossums, as foragers, are known to cause visible outdoor damage. Signs include upturned plants, soil disturbances from their nesting or feeding, lawn damage from searching for insects, and garbage scattered near bins due to their foraging activities.

Distinctive Smells: Opossums emit a notable, strong scent that acts as a primary indicator of their presence, especially around their nesting or eating locations. This odor is particularly potent in confined spaces like under decks, in garages, or in crawl spaces.

Droppings and Tracks: The discovery of large, oblong opossum droppings, often along their traveled routes, is a definitive sign of infestation. Their distinctive tracks, with opposable thumbs on the hind feet, further confirm their activity.

Direct Observations: Seeing an opossum, particularly at twilight or dawn, unequivocally proves their presence, especially if sightings are frequent or near points of entry to your property.

Identifying these signs is essential for managing opossum situations effectively. If you encounter any of these symptoms, immediate action is required. Utilizing a professional service like Critter Stop assures a compassionate and successful resolution, safeguarding both the animals and your premises.

Managing Opossums in Your Attic: Approaches and Prevention

Finding an opossum in your attic demands a deliberate and cautious strategy. Confirm their presence with evidence such as droppings, nesting debris, and their characteristic musky smell. Direct interaction with opossums is not recommended due to their potential for defensive behavior. Instead, remove their food sources, block access points to your property, and call on Critter Stop in Hurst for professional assistance. Our extensive experience in opossum management allows us to handle these scenarios effectively.

Post-removal, it's vital to implement strategies to prevent their return. This includes securing potential access areas and cleaning the premises to discourage other opossums. Regular attic inspections and maintenance are critical to maintaining a wildlife-free space, thus preserving the safety and calm of your home.

I’d give a 10 star review if I could! We had a great experience with Critter Stop. Everyone I dealt was friendly, professional, and reassuring. Phillip was very helpful and knowledgeable about the work he was doing. He walked me around the entire house to make sure I saw and understood the services he provided. He was also really nice and answered all my questions — he is exactly the type of person that should be interacting with customers.I love the fact that they will come back for up to 1 year after installation if any problems occur — this shows me they stand behind their work. The owner was great too, he personally came to my house and walked me through their offering. I recommend critter stop to anyone and everyone!

Critter Stop is a fantastic business! Everyone involved is extremely professional and very easy to communicate with. Chisam, the owner, did a great job of explaining the process to get the squirrels out of my attic during the initial free estimate. The exclusion crew who did all of the initial work was fabulous. The crew consisted of Phillip, Nick and Corey who arrived promptly when they said they would. They are happy, positive employees. Everyone is very polite and patient in explaining their work and answering questions. They came back several times to check the traps and finish it off with the fogging. Lester was very good about following up to schedule each trap check with me, and the office staff who took care of the billing was very efficient. Critter Stop is a well run company with honest, trustworthy employees! Thank you to all of you who worked hard to make my attic critter free and for the peace of mind that you guarantee your work. Great to know I can call them if for some reason a squirrel figures out a way to get back in!
