Black widows and brown recluses aren't rare oddities that occasionally wander in from somewhere else, both are established, native species found throughout Texas, indoors and outdoors, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. Black widows favor undisturbed spots like woodpiles, meter boxes, and eaves. Brown recluses hide in boxes, old clothing, and other rarely-disturbed dark spaces, commonly in garages and basements. Neither species is aggressive, but both will bite if trapped or disturbed, which is exactly what happens when someone reaches into a box or shoe that's been sitting undisturbed for months.
