How to Spot a Skunk Infestation: 5 Key Signs

Identifying a skunk infestation early is crucial in preventing extensive damage and health risks. At Critter Stop, we've compiled a list of five telltale signs that indicate a skunk presence in your North Texas property:

Distinctive Odor: When we have provided our skunk trapping services in Dallas, we found that The most obvious sign of a skunk presence is their notorious odor. Skunks release a powerful, musky scent as a defense mechanism. If you notice this unmistakable smell around your property, it's a strong indication of skunk activity nearby.

Holes and Dug-Up Gardens: Skunks are known for their digging habits. They often dig small holes in yards and gardens in search of grubs and insects. If you notice small, cone-shaped holes or disturbed soil, it could be a sign of skunks foraging in your area.

Skunk Tracks: Skunk footprints are distinctive, featuring five toes on each foot with visible claw marks. Finding such tracks around your property, especially near garbage areas or gardens, suggests skunk activity.

Skunk Droppings: Based on our experience, Skunk droppings are another indicator of an infestation. Their droppings are similar in size to a cat’s but contain undigested food like insects, small bones, or seeds. It's important to be cautious as skunk droppings can carry harmful diseases.

Damage to Structures: Skunks often seek shelter in dark, quiet areas such as under decks, sheds, or crawl spaces. If you notice damage or disturbances in these areas, it could be a sign of skunks making a home on your property.

Skunks in my property: What to do

Discovering skunks on your property can be unsettling and pose a unique challenge. These creatures, while generally non-aggressive, can cause significant damage and emit a notoriously unpleasant odor when threatened. The first step in dealing with skunks is to remain calm and avoid startling them, as this could trigger their defensive spray.

If you suspect skunk activity, it's important to identify and eliminate potential food sources. Secure garbage cans, remove pet food, and cover compost piles to make your property less attractive to skunks. Additionally, check for and seal off any potential entry points to crawl spaces, decks, and sheds, as skunks often seek shelter in these areas. Guidelines for Effective Skunk Capture: A Detailed Approach

Securing a Skunk Safely

To successfully trap a skunk without risking a spray, adhere to these essential steps:

Select an Appropriate Trap: The choice of trap is vital. A suitable live trap should measure at least 10x12x32 inches and be robust enough to support a skunk's weight, with a reliable lock mechanism. At Critter Stop, we opt for open, caged traps rather than covered ones, as this allows us to clearly see and confirm the capture of an animal.

Prepare the Trap with Bait: Being omnivorous, skunks are drawn to various foods including fruits, meats, and vegetables. Effective baits are canned cat food, peanut butter, and sardines. Ensure the bait is placed deep within the trap to guarantee the skunk activates the trigger plate.

Position the Trap Strategically: Install the trap in a location frequently visited by skunks, such as near their dens or garbage areas. It's important to ensure the trap is evenly balanced and secure to avoid tipping.

Monitor the Trap Consistently: Leaving skunks trapped for too long can cause them stress and dehydration. Regularly check the trap, ideally every few hours, and be prepared to release the skunk promptly.

Safely Release the Skunk: When releasing the skunk, wear protective gear and use gloves. Approach the trap in a slow, steady manner to avoid startling the animal. Open the trap door from a safe distance, allowing the skunk to leave at its own pace.

I’d give a 10 star review if I could! We had a great experience with Critter Stop. Everyone I dealt was friendly, professional, and reassuring. Phillip was very helpful and knowledgeable about the work he was doing. He walked me around the entire house to make sure I saw and understood the services he provided. He was also really nice and answered all my questions — he is exactly the type of person that should be interacting with customers.I love the fact that they will come back for up to 1 year after installation if any problems occur — this shows me they stand behind their work. The owner was great too, he personally came to my house and walked me through their offering. I recommend critter stop to anyone and everyone!

Critter Stop is a fantastic business! Everyone involved is extremely professional and very easy to communicate with. Chisam, the owner, did a great job of explaining the process to get the squirrels out of my attic during the initial free estimate. The exclusion crew who did all of the initial work was fabulous. The crew consisted of Phillip, Nick and Corey who arrived promptly when they said they would. They are happy, positive employees. Everyone is very polite and patient in explaining their work and answering questions. They came back several times to check the traps and finish it off with the fogging. Lester was very good about following up to schedule each trap check with me, and the office staff who took care of the billing was very efficient. Critter Stop is a well run company with honest, trustworthy employees! Thank you to all of you who worked hard to make my attic critter free and for the peace of mind that you guarantee your work. Great to know I can call them if for some reason a squirrel figures out a way to get back in!
