Warning Signs You Have a Mouse in the House

Most people who have mice and other rodents in their houses won’t see them. They’re sneaky and mostly come out at night. Instead, based on our experience providing rodent removal services, you should keep an eye out for other warning signs of rodents, including:

  1. Droppings and grease spots
  2. Sounds of scratching or skittering
  3. Signs of chewing or mouse holes
  4. Nesting

Warning Signs You May Have Other Wildlife in the House

Not sure your wildlife infestation problem is a rodent? When we have provided our wildlife removal services, we have found some warning signs of other common wildlife in the home, including:

Raccoon - raccoons are destructive when they’re getting into the house. Most often, they make large holes in the roof to get into the attic. Unlike rodents who leave droppings and grease spots throughout the home, raccoons usually have one designated latrine area. You will also hear the raccoons in the attic, walls, or crawl spaces.

Opossum - for the most part, warning signs left by opossums will mimic that of raccoons. However, opossums do not use latrines, so you will see droppings and grease spots. Additionally, you are unlikely to hear noises from the opossums except at night.

Squirrel - these little guys look cute outside the home, but once they’re in your house, squirrels are much more destructive. In our experience, they are most active between the morning hours of 7 am and 10 am, squirrels can be noisy, and they’re likely to destroy just about anything for nesting materials.

How to Prevent Rodents & Wildlife from Entering Your Home

You may have heard the old saying Check your home for small cracks, crevices, and holes. If a pencil can fit through it, a mouse can fit too. Use caulk, sealant, and weather stripping as necessary to remove any potential entry points for mice and rodents.

Remove access to food supplies by storing food in sealed containers and keeping garbage in lidded bins.

Make sure there are no materials stored inside or outside your home that would attract a rodent infestation. Inside the home, that means discarding old newspapers and magazines and cleaning your linens and their storage areas regularly. Outside the home, wood piles, stacked boxes, and other clutter make great nesting materials and safe homes for mice.
