Understanding the Problems Caused by Rats

  • 1. Health Hazards

Rats carry various diseases that can be transmitted to humans. Coming in direct contact with rat feces or even inhaling the air where rats have nested can lead to health issues. The three more common diseases that rats could transmit to humans are:

  • Bubonic Plague: Often associated with historical epidemics, this disease is transmitted to humans through the bite of fleas that have previously fed on an infected rat.
  • Leptospirosis: A bacterial disease spread through rat urine. Humans can become infected when they come into contact with water, soil, or food contaminated by infected rat urine.
  • Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome: A viral disease transmitted through rat urine, feces, or saliva. Humans can contract it by inhaling aerosolized virus, especially in environments with significant rodent infestations.
  • 2. Structural Damage

Rats have strong teeth and can gnaw through wood, insulation, and even some types of wiring. This can not only lead to expensive repairs but also pose fire hazards. When we provided rat removal services in Plano, we saw that the next three are the most frequent structural damages at our customer's house:

  • Electrical Wiring Damage: One of the most concerning structural damages caused by rats is their gnawing on electrical wiring. Not only does this result in costly repairs, but chewed wires can also lead to electrical shorts, appliance malfunctions, or even house fires. Exposed wires from their gnawing can create a significant fire risk, especially if those wires are near flammable materials.
  • Damage to Insulation: Rats often burrow into and nest within the insulation found in attics and walls. Over time, they can compact, shred, and contaminate it with their urine, feces, and nesting materials. This not only reduces the insulation's effectiveness, leading to increased heating and cooling costs but also creates a health risk from the contaminants they leave behind.
  •  Structural Wood Damage: While rats primarily prefer softer materials, they can and will gnaw on wooden structures if needed, especially to gain access to a new area or create nesting sites. Over time, this can weaken the structural integrity of wooden beams, floor joists, and other foundational elements of a house. Additionally, any holes gnawed by rats can also provide entry points for other pests and allow moisture to enter, leading to further damage and potential mold growth.

In addition to these structural damages, rats can also cause damage to ductwork, plumbing, and other essential systems in a house. The continuous gnawing habit of rats, combined with their ability to breed rapidly, means that a small infestation can lead to significant damage in a relatively short amount of time.

  • 3. Contamination

Rats can contaminate your home through their urine, feces, and saliva, which they leave behind as they navigate your living spaces. These excretions can carry various pathogens harmful to humans. As rats scavenge for food, they often invade kitchen areas, contaminating food supplies and surfaces. Moreover, their fur can carry mites and fleas that can be introduced into your home, posing additional health risks.

The combined presence of these contaminants and pests can quickly transform a clean environment into one riddled with potential disease-causing agents, making rat infestations a significant concern for homeowners.

How do I know if I have a rat infestation?

Spotting any of the next signs is a strong indication of a rat infestation and typically warrants a closer inspection or professional Critter Control assistance to effectively manage the situation:

Droppings: One of the most definitive signs of a rat infestation is the presence of rat droppings. These droppings are dark brown, spindle-shaped, and about 1/2 to 3/4 inch in length. You're likely to find them concentrated in areas where rats feed or nest, such as in kitchens, storage areas, or hidden corners.

Gnaw Marks: Rats have strong teeth that continuously grow, compelling them to gnaw on hard materials to keep them in check. Look for gnaw marks on wood, plastic, cardboard, and even electrical wiring. These marks can sometimes be distinguished from those made by smaller rodents due to their size and depth.

Noises: Rats are most active at night and you might hear them scurrying, scratching, or gnawing in walls, ceilings, and floorboards. These sounds are often more noticeable during quiet nighttime hours and can be a clear indicator of a rat presence in your home.

Our rat removal process

Critter Stop's process for rat removal is comprehensive and involves several steps, focusing on both immediate eradication and ongoing protection of your property:

Initial Consultation and Inspection: The service begins with a free inspection visit at your home. During this thorough inspection, the team assesses both inside and outside areas, pinpointing damage, rat entry points, nesting spots, and evidence like droppings. A tailored strategy is then formulated to effectively tackle your specific rat issue.

Home Fortification: A critical part of the process is reinforcing your home to block future rodent access. The team diligently seals up potential openings from top to bottom, followed by strategic placement of traps in areas with suspected rat activity.

Rat Extraction: The team continuously monitors the traps and employs game cameras to track rat movements. After clearing the traps, they are re-set, and all previously sealed areas are inspected again to confirm no new breaches have occurred.
Damage Repair and Sanitization: Completing the process, Critter Stop focuses on repairing any rat-caused damage. This includes replacing any compromised insulation and thoroughly sanitizing the area to eliminate rat pheromones, thus reducing the likelihood of new infestations.

If you've identified signs of rats in your attic, walls, or any part of your home in Plano, it's crucial to act swiftly. The longer they remain, the greater the damage and risks. Critter Stop is a fantastic business! Everyone involved is extremely professional and very easy to communicate with. Chisam, the owner, did a great job of explaining the process to get the squirrels out of my attic during the initial free estimate. The exclusion crew who did all of the initial work was fabulous. The crew consisted of Phillip, Nick and Corey who arrived promptly when they said they would. They are happy, positive employees. Everyone is very polite and patient in explaining their work and answering questions. They came back several times to check the traps and finish it off with the fogging. Lester was very good about following up to schedule each trap check with me, and the office staff who took care of the billing was very efficient. Critter Stop is a well run company with honest, trustworthy employees! Thank you to all of you who worked hard to make my attic critter free and for the peace of mind that you guarantee your work. Great to know I can call them if for some reason a squirrel figures out a way to get back in!
