How Big Can a Raccoon Get? Exploring the Size Range of North America's Mischievous Mammal

Raccoons are one of the most common mammals found in North America. Distinctive due to their black “mask” or eyes and ringed tail, as well as their mischievous and curious nature. While many people are familiar with raccoons, not everyone knows just how big they can get or how much can a raccoon weight.

Raccoons belong to the Procyonidae family, which includes other small to medium-sized mammals such as coatis and kinkajous. So, what’s the average weight of a raccoon? The size of raccoons can vary depending on their geographic location and subspecies. Generally, raccoons range in size from 2 to 3 feet in length and can weigh anywhere from 10 to 30 pounds. However, some raccoons have been known to grow much larger than this.

So, just how fast can a raccoon grow? While it is rare, some raccoons have been documented to weigh over 60 pounds and measure over 4 feet in length. These larger raccoons are typically found in areas with abundant food sources, such as urban areas where they can scavenge from trash cans and gardens. However, it is important to note that these larger raccoons are the exception rather than the norm.

Factors Affecting Raccoon Size

Raccoons are known for their distinct markings and furry tails, but their size can vary greatly depending on several factors. This begs the question, how tall is a raccoon? Here are some of the key factors that affect raccoon size:

Diet

Diet plays a significant role in a raccoon's growth and size. Being an omnivore, they can eat almost everything but their diet can vary depending on their geographic location and the availability of food. While in  urban areas, it's very common to scavenge for food in trash cans, which can lead to overeating and obesity. In the wild, raccoons may eat a more diverse diet of insects, fruits, nuts, and small animals. A well-rounded diet can lead to healthy growth and development in raccoons.

Geographic Location

Raccoons can be found throughout North America, but their size can vary depending on their geographic location. Raccoons in the northern part of their range tend to be larger than those in the southern part of their range. This may be due to the need to conserve body heat in colder climates, which requires more body mass.

Age

Like most animals, raccoons grow rapidly in their first year of life. They can reach adult size by the time they are six months old, but they will continue to grow until they are about two years old. After that, their growth will slow down and they will reach their maximum size. The size of a raccoon can also be affected by its health and genetics.

Overall, raccoons can grow to be quite large, with adult males weighing anywhere from 15 to 40 pounds and females weighing slightly less. However, factors such as diet, geographic location, and age can all affect a raccoon's size. By understanding these factors, we can better appreciate the diversity of this fascinating animal.

Maximum Size of Raccoons

Raccoons are medium-sized mammals that are native to North America. Thanks to their distinguishable black mask and ringed tail. The maximum size of raccoons can vary depending on a plethora of factors such as their genes, the availability of food and their surroundings. In this section, we will discuss the maximum weight and length that raccoons can reach.

Weight

Adult raccoons can weigh anywhere between 8 to 20 pounds. However, it is not uncommon for some raccoons to exceed this weight range. In captivity, raccoons have been known to weigh up to 60 pounds. This is because they have access to a constant supply of food, which allows them to grow larger than their wild counterparts.

Length

The average length of an adult raccoon is between 24 to 38 inches, including their tail. Up to 16 inches long can be the total measurement of their tail. However, some raccoons can exceed this length. You wonder, how fast raccoons can grow? In captivity, raccoons have been known to grow up to 4 feet long.

Raccoons grow rapidly during their first year of life. Which brings another question, how much does an adult raccoon weigh? They are born weighing only a few ounces and can reach their adult size within a year. The growth rate of raccoons can vary depending on their access to food and other resources.

In the wild, raccoons primarily feed on fruits, nuts, insects, and small animals. Being an opportunistic feeder, they can eat anything they can find. In captivity, raccoons are typically fed a diet of fruits, vegetables, and protein sources such as chicken or fish.

Female raccoons give birth to litters of 2 to 5 kits each year. Born blind and helpless, the kits rely on the mother for food and protection. Being weaned nearly 8 to 10 weeks of age and will leave their mother's den at around 12 weeks.

Raccoons can be found in both wild and urban areas. They are highly adaptable and can survive in a wide range of habitats.Typically in the wild, they can live up to 3 years, but when taken care of and in captivity they can live nearly 20 years.

In conclusion, the maximum size of raccoons can vary depending on various factors. Adult raccoons can weigh up to 20 pounds and grow up to 38 inches long, including their tail. In captivity, raccoons can exceed these size ranges due to their access to a constant supply of food. Raccoons grow rapidly during their first year of life and primarily feed on fruits, nuts, insects, and small animals. They are highly adaptable and can survive in a wide range of habitats.

I’d give a 10 star review if I could! We had a great experience with Critter Stop. Everyone I dealt was friendly, professional, and reassuring. Phillip was very helpful and knowledgeable about the work he was doing. He walked me around the entire house to make sure I saw and understood the services he provided. He was also really nice and answered all my questions — he is exactly the type of person that should be interacting with customers.I love the fact that they will come back for up to 1 year after installation if any problems occur — this shows me they stand behind their work. The owner was great too, he personally came to my house and walked me through their offering. I recommend critter stop to anyone and everyone!

Critter Stop is a fantastic business! Everyone involved is extremely professional and very easy to communicate with. Chisam, the owner, did a great job of explaining the process to get the squirrels out of my attic during the initial free estimate. The exclusion crew who did all of the initial work was fabulous. The crew consisted of Phillip, Nick and Corey who arrived promptly when they said they would. They are happy, positive employees. Everyone is very polite and patient in explaining their work and answering questions. They came back several times to check the traps and finish it off with the fogging. Lester was very good about following up to schedule each trap check with me, and the office staff who took care of the billing was very efficient. Critter Stop is a well run company with honest, trustworthy employees! Thank you to all of you who worked hard to make my attic critter free and for the peace of mind that you guarantee your work. Great to know I can call them if for some reason a squirrel figures out a way to get back in!
