Squirrel Noises At Night

The Nocturnal Habits of Squirrels

Understanding Squirrel Behavior

Squirrels are fascinating creatures known for their agility and adaptability. Most species of squirrels are diurnal, which means they are primarily active during the day. However, there are instances when these creatures exhibit nocturnal behavior. At Critter Stop, we think that to understand why squirrels make noises at night, it's crucial to delve into their behavior patterns.

Squirrels are renowned for their constant quest for food. They are opportunistic eaters, relying on a diet that includes nuts, seeds, fruits, and even the occasional insect. This quest for sustenance often compels them to be active during daylight hours when food sources are abundant and easily accessible.

During the daytime, you might observe squirrels darting through trees, bounding across your backyard, or burying nuts for later consumption. These daytime activities are essential for their survival, as they gather and store food to sustain themselves through periods of scarcity, such as winter.

Common Squirrel Noises at Night

Chirping and Chattering

Perhaps one of the most perplexing aspects of squirrel behavior is their tendency to emit high-pitched chirping or chattering sounds at night. These sounds are often mistaken for birdsong, as they are remarkably similar in tone and frequency. However, squirrels are the true culprits behind these nocturnal noises.

Chirping and chattering are vocalizations primarily associated with communication among squirrels. These sounds serve several purposes, including signaling danger, alerting others to the presence of food, or establishing dominance within their social hierarchy. At night, when the environment is quieter, these vocalizations can become more pronounced and noticeable to humans.

Scratching and Rustling

In our experience, if you hear scratching or rustling sounds emanating from your attic or walls during the night, squirrels may have found their way into your living space. Squirrels are skilled climbers, capable of accessing even the most seemingly secure areas of your home.

The nocturnal rustling and scratching you hear could be attributed to squirrels seeking shelter or attempting to create nests. Attics, chimneys, and wall voids provide ideal hiding spots for these creatures, especially during the breeding season when they seek safe and warm places to raise their young.

Reasons Behind Nocturnal Squirrel Activity

Search for Food

As Squirrel removal experts, we can say that while squirrels are predominantly active during the day, they may venture out at night in search of food under specific circumstances. One common reason for nocturnal foraging is the competition for resources during daylight hours. When food sources are scarce or when squirrels face competition from other wildlife, they may resort to nighttime feeding to avoid conflicts.

Territorial Disputes

When we have provided our squirrel removal services, we have found that they are territorial creatures, and these territorial disputes can sometimes escalate at night. During the breeding season, which typically occurs in late winter and early spring, male squirrels may engage in fierce battles over territory and access to females. These confrontations can result in vocalizations and aggressive behavior, leading to an increase in nighttime squirrel noises.

Identifying Squirrel Sounds

Differentiating from Other Noises

Identifying squirrel sounds at night can be challenging, especially since many other animals, such as rats and mice, can also produce similar noises. To distinguish squirrel noises from those of other creatures, pay attention to the frequency and intensity of the sounds. Squirrel noises often have a more rapid and repetitive quality, while the sounds of rodents like rats tend to be more sporadic and less rhythmic.

Additionally, the location of the noises can provide clues. Scratching sounds coming from your attic or walls are more likely to be squirrels, as they are agile climbers. On the other hand, rodents like rats are more commonly associated with noises within wall voids or crawl spaces.

Understanding the distinct characteristics of squirrel noises can help you determine the source and take appropriate action if needed.

When Should You Be Concerned?

Signs of Infestation

While the occasional visit from a squirrel may not be a cause for alarm, infestations can lead to significant issues. Here are some signs to watch for that may indicate a squirrel infestation:

  • Visible Entry Points: Check for openings or holes in your home's exterior, as squirrels may use these to access your attic or walls.
  • Nesting Material: Discovering nests made of leaves, twigs, and other materials in your attic is a clear sign of squirrel activity.
  • Droppings: Squirrel droppings resemble small, oblong pellets and can be found near nesting sites or entry points.
  • Damage: Squirrels can cause damage by gnawing on electrical wiring, insulation, and wooden structures. Keep an eye out for signs of damage in your home.

If you notice any of these signs, it's essential to address the issue promptly to prevent further damage and disruptions caused by nocturnal squirrel activity. I’d give a 10 star review if I could! We had a great experience with Critter Stop. Everyone I dealt was friendly, professional, and reassuring. Phillip was very helpful and knowledgeable about the work he was doing. He walked me around the entire house to make sure I saw and understood the services he provided. He was also really nice and answered all my questions — he is exactly the type of person that should be interacting with customers.I love the fact that they will come back for up to 1 year after installation if any problems occur — this shows me they stand behind their work. The owner was great too, he personally came to my house and walked me through their offering. I recommend critter stop to anyone and everyone!

Critter Stop is a fantastic business! Everyone involved is extremely professional and very easy to communicate with. Chisam, the owner, did a great job of explaining the process to get the squirrels out of my attic during the initial free estimate. The exclusion crew who did all of the initial work was fabulous. The crew consisted of Phillip, Nick and Corey who arrived promptly when they said they would. They are happy, positive employees. Everyone is very polite and patient in explaining their work and answering questions. They came back several times to check the traps and finish it off with the fogging. Lester was very good about following up to schedule each trap check with me, and the office staff who took care of the billing was very efficient. Critter Stop is a well run company with honest, trustworthy employees! Thank you to all of you who worked hard to make my attic critter free and for the peace of mind that you guarantee your work. Great to know I can call them if for some reason a squirrel figures out a way to get back in!
