What to Do When Your Dog Gets Sprayed by a Skunk at Night

what to do if your dog gets sprayed by a skunk

Encountering a skunk's spray can turn a peaceful evening into a frantic clean-up mission, especially when your dog is the unfortunate recipient. The pungent odor can permeate everything it touches, making swift and effective action crucial. Here at Critter Stop, we understand this situation's urgency and guide you through the steps to ensure your dog's comfort and your home's freshness.

Understanding Skunk Spray

what to do when your dog gets sprayed by a skunk

Skunk spray is a potent mixture of chemicals, primarily thiols, giving it a distinctive and overpowering odor. When a skunk feels threatened, it releases this spray as a defense mechanism, and the strong scent can travel considerable distances.

Immediate Actions to Take

  • Act Quickly: Time is of the essence to prevent the odor from setting in.
  • Move Indoors: Bring your dog indoors to prevent the odor from spreading throughout your home.
  • Check for Injuries: Assess if your dog has been sprayed in the eyes, mouth, or nose. Rinse these areas immediately with water to prevent irritation.

De-Skunking Your Dog

my dog got sprayed by a skunk what do i do

1. Prepare a De-Skunking Solution

Skunks are known for their powerful scent. If your dog gets sprayed, you'll want to act quickly. Mix 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and one teaspoon of liquid dish soap in a large bowl. Use this mixture immediately after preparation, as it can lose effectiveness over time.

2. Apply the Solution

Once you've mixed up your de-skunking solution, don't waste any time before applying it to your pet. First, put on a pair of rubber gloves to protect your hands from the potent smell. Next, thoroughly saturate your dog's fur with the solution. Avoid their eyes, nose, and mouth, as these areas can be very sensitive.

3. Let the Solution Sit

Allow the solution to sit on your dog's fur for 5-10 minutes. This will give it time to neutralize the skunk oils, which will help eliminate the smell.

4. Rinse and Repeat

After you've let the solution sit, it's time to rinse it off. Give your dog a thorough rinse with lukewarm water, being careful to wash away all traces of the de-skunking mixture. If the smell persists, you may need to repeat the process.

Additional Tips for Odor Removal

  • Use Vinegar: After de-skunking your dog, consider giving them a bath with a solution of one part vinegar to three parts water. Vinegar can help neutralize odors and is safe for your dog's skin.
  • Commercial Deodorizing Shampoos: If home remedies aren't working, you can try a commercial skunk odor removal shampoo designed for pets.
  • Consult Your Vet: If your dog shows signs of irritation or discomfort after being sprayed, it's always a good idea to consult your veterinarian. They can provide further guidance on how to care for your pet.

Preventive Measures

Encountering a skunk can be alarming for both you and your dog. Here are some steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of future encounters:

  • Secure Trash and Food Sources: Skunks are attracted to food sources, so securing them can help keep them away from your property.
  • Keep Your Dog Leashed: Especially at night, when skunks are most active, keeping them leashed and under your supervision can prevent them from wandering into skunk territory.

Post-Skunk Incident Care

After you've de-skunked your dog, there are a few additional steps you can take to ensure their comfort and prevent lingering odors in your home:

1. Drying Your Dog

  • Towel Dry: Gently towel dry your dog to remove excess moisture.
  • Air Dry: Allow your dog to air dry naturally in a warm, draft-free area. Avoid using a hairdryer, as it can agitate their skin.

2. Skin and Coat Care

  • Moisturize: Apply a pet-safe moisturizing spray or aloe vera gel to soothe your dog's skin.
  • Brushing: Brush your dog's coat to remove any remaining skunk spray residue and to distribute natural oils.

3. Monitoring for Signs of Discomfort

  • Watch for Irritation: Monitor your dog for signs of skin irritation, excessive scratching, or discomfort. If symptoms persist, consult your veterinarian.

4. Cleaning Contaminated Items

  • Wash Bedding and Clothing: Launder any bedding, blankets, or clothing that may have come into contact with skunk spray using detergent and vinegar to neutralize odors.

I’d give a 10 star review if I could! We had a great experience with Critter Stop. Everyone I dealt was friendly, professional, and reassuring. Phillip was very helpful and knowledgeable about the work he was doing. He walked me around the entire house to make sure I saw and understood the services he provided. He was also really nice and answered all my questions — he is exactly the type of person that should be interacting with customers.I love the fact that they will come back for up to 1 year after installation if any problems occur — this shows me they stand behind their work. The owner was great too, he personally came to my house and walked me through their offering. I recommend critter stop to anyone and everyone!

Critter Stop is a fantastic business! Everyone involved is extremely professional and very easy to communicate with. Chisam, the owner, did a great job of explaining the process to get the squirrels out of my attic during the initial free estimate. The exclusion crew who did all of the initial work was fabulous. The crew consisted of Phillip, Nick and Corey who arrived promptly when they said they would. They are happy, positive employees. Everyone is very polite and patient in explaining their work and answering questions. They came back several times to check the traps and finish it off with the fogging. Lester was very good about following up to schedule each trap check with me, and the office staff who took care of the billing was very efficient. Critter Stop is a well run company with honest, trustworthy employees! Thank you to all of you who worked hard to make my attic critter free and for the peace of mind that you guarantee your work. Great to know I can call them if for some reason a squirrel figures out a way to get back in!
